Inspiring Momtreprenuers

Meet The the Mom Behind "Moms on Vacation Travel Club"

Inspired Gifts is a mom-owned business with a unique twist! We are three Moms spanning the globe from Singapore, Hawaii to Florida. All of our close family & friends live an ocean away, which lead to the creation of our Inspirational Photo Books & Gifts collection for family, friends, children and babies.

The Moms at Inspired Gifts want to show our support to other Momtreprenuers by spreading the word about their businesses. This week we are thrilled to introduce you to the Mom behind Moms on Vacation Travel Club, Caroline.

We chatted with Caroline a bit to get to know her business, inspiration and advice she has for other Moms looking to start their own business. Here’s how our conversation went (follow the Q & A):

Q: What is the Story and Inspiration behind Moms on Vacation?
A: I started Moms on Vacation in 2008 after I went on a weekend getaway with 15 other moms to celebrate my best friend's birthday. At that time, I had never left my two kids who were 2 1/2 and 7 months. Going away on a short vacation with other moms made me realize how I needed this time to regroup after having two kids. I was in desperate need of relaxation and sleep and needed to re-connect with my old self, the one I used to know before I had kids. All moms had such a good time and left the weekend feeling like they could tackle motherhood's demands once again.

I was working as an engineer at the time and dreamed of working from home. I started organizing trips for moms locally in Vermont and suddenly moms were signing up for my trips! Last November, I decided to quit my full-time engineering job and spread the word about the Moms on Vacation to the rest of the world! I'm now a certified travel consultant who has worked as a group travel organizer and for cruise lines in the past.

Q: What Services does Moms on Vacation offer?
A: The Moms on Vacation offers free travel planning services to moms who want to enjoy a few days off. We do all the planning and moms just have to show up. We also offer organized group trips for moms who do not have anyone to travel with or groups of moms who want to take advantage of group rates, which are lower than individual rates and offer perks and discounts. All of our organized trips are 1-3 days and we try to keep the cost below $300. You can also find travel ideas and reviews on our website to help plan your mom vacation.

Q: As a Business owner, what advice would you offer other moms wanting to start a business?
A: I find it difficult to balance my life as a mom of preschool children and as an entrepreneur. I work hard, mostly in the evenings and naps, to make sure that my children's needs are met. Starting your own business is a difficult process, but look around you and you will find great resources and people to help. Look on Twitter and Facebook. Take advantage of social networking! It can be a time drain, but it's how you build your brand and keep in touch with your followers. It's also where I've made contact with so many great moms that have helped get the word out there about my business.

Organic Living: How To Make Organic Soap

    How to Make Organic Soap
    By Rebecca Henry

When I gave birth to my little ginger haired daughter, I realized that my life was about to change. Everyday decisions had to be reevaluated. Penelope’s ginger hair and fair complexion complicated matters for her well being. She is allergic to almost everything smelly, dyed or chemically treated…which means just about everything!

Being a little girl, she loves scented shampoos, body lotions and dyed soaps. But as a protective mom, I couldn’t allow her to use those chemically induced products. Her delicate skin breaks out in rashes and hives whenever she gets her hands on something polluted. So what can I do to give her these girlie luxuries without harming her little body? The answer is, I make it!

Organic soap is so easy to make and the results can be something that looks very complicated. First thing you need is a block of melt and pour soap. I use the organic goats milk soap, it is very gentle on Penelope’s skin and leaves her body soft and silky. Melt the soap in your microwave.

Add some wonderful mica coloring (all natural minerals) or bottled natural colorants. Then incorporate aromatherapy oils or pure essential oil for scent.  You could also use dried fruit or flower leaves to add a bit of scent without using minerals or colorants. These steps are purely optional and are not needed to make homemade soap.

Next pour your melted soap into the mold or molds of your choice. Place in the fridge for 20 mins. Until firm. Pop out of the mold and use! If you would like to save the soap make sure to wrap it up in cellophane to prevent shrinking.

This process can be as simple as 1, 2, 3 or as intricate and creative as your imagination can go. If you want more of a spa feel to your soaps try incorporating natural body scrubs such as poppy seeds, cranberry seeds, and apricot seeds. I have even used dried slice oranges and lavender in my soaps.

There are tons of fun, creative molds out there for you and your little one. I have made Penelope soap from molds of: mermaids, ponies, flowers, princesses, ballerinas, crayons, trains, boats, lizards and so much more. The best part about soap making is it is safe enough to have your little one join in. Penelope loves to add the ingredients and help pour the soap into the mold.

Not only are these soaps great for you and your family, but they also make the best presents or accessory to a special gift. Just a warning though, organic soap making might lead you to other great projects like mineral makeup, shampoos and lip balm. I’m hooked and do it all! You might too.

I buy all my soap making products from them.

Below are some links with instructions on how to make your own melt and pour soap.

    Gray at 30!

My New Best Friend: Vitamin B5
    By: Rebecca Henry

HELP IT'S HAPPENING!! I woke up and there it was...a long glimmering, shimmering gray hair!! NOOOOO! I'm 30, not 50 so why do I see a gray hair??? I know it will happen eventually. I know I am going to have to face the aging process one day, but I wasn't  prepared for that dreaded day being today!

So as I stood in my bathroom mirror fixating on that lone silver hair I asked myself "how can I stop this?" My first reaction was to pluck the gray hair out, which I did. But then I started thinking...what if I get more!!?? So I did a little research on how to delay this graying process and here is what I found:

Graying hair is normal and everyone will go through the process, but vitamin B-5, also known as pantothenic acid may help slow down this distressing fate! Vitamin B-5 prevents premature gray hair. You can take a B-5 supplement, or eat a balanced diet rich in Vitamin B-5 foods such as broccoli, turnip greens, sunflower seeds, tomato, strawberries, yogurt, eggs, winter squash, collard greens, and corn. But make sure you eat the food in its raw state. Cooking, it can deplete the vitamin.

Now that I know this secret I’ll be doubling up on my B-5 vitamin and if I see another sneaky gray hair I’m going to whip out my black mascara and color it in. I’ll give the Vitamin B a chance to work her magic before I begin to pluck my hair out. Who knew this tiny little vitamin could be your hair’s best friend!

Meet The the Moms at BB's News... A Siblings Celebration

This week we are thrilled to introduce you to the Moms behind BB’s News... A Sibling Celebration, Patti Muller & Marty Harper.

We chatted with them a bit to get to know their business, inspiration and advice they have for other Moms looking to start their own business. Here’s how our conversation went (follow the Q & A):

Q: What is the Story and Inspiration behind BB’s News?

A: As a mother of two, Patti Muller had long been frustrated in her efforts to buy a really cute Big “Sibling” shirt for her older child. Everything she found was too simple or too generic.

Sensing a market need, she decided to start a business based on the Big Sibling shirt concept in 2007, but life happened and her dream of owning a business took a backseat to the demands of motherhood. Two years later, her neighbor and mother of two, Marty Harper, came along to provide the support needed to get a business off the ground.

Although Marty endorsed the idea of starting a big sibling shirt business (she too had been dissatisfied with big sibling shirt selection), she and Patti also considered many exciting concepts, temporarily deciding that each would be "The One" before coming back to Patti's original idea. They considered SWAG Bags, Blingy shirts for children and women, and finally products from a Spirit Gear Company.

Patti and Marty formed their company, SWAG Apparel, in October 2009 with the support of their loving families, focusing solely on the division BB’s News… A Sibling Celebration, Big Brother and Big Sister T-shirts.

Q: What Products does your online store offer?

A: We offer, Big Brother and Big Sister Tees.
We provide consumers with a variety of fashionable silhouettes (ringer tee, double ruffle, lettuce edge and colorful basics).  Our graphics boast sibling status without sacrificing style.  We use specialty inks such as metallic, puff, glitter, and gel to add texture to each graphic.  Each gift tee includes a sentimental sibling pledge as a keepsake for the child.

Q: As a Business owner,  what advice would you offer other moms wanting to start a business?

A: The best part of owning a business is the growth one experiences as a mother, most importantly, but also as an individual.  Patti and I learn, each day, ways to better our time management and balance the demands of Motherhood.  We have no secrets to success, we take each day and learn from it.  Our new company allows us to grow and glow!!!

Beauty Tips for the Natural Girl

    Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil
    By Rebecca Henry

    Coconut Oil for Glowing Skin:
My top beauty secret for radiant skin and shinny hair is Virgin Coconut Oil. I'm going to share with you some great tips on how to use Virgin Coconut Oil and the benefits your skin and hair will receive by using it.

Many women try to find that perfect skin cream that will give their face that super model glow, but did you know that the secret may not be in a store prepackaged container?  Instead of running to the beauty isle in the grocery store, try looking in ethnic section for Virgin Coconut Oil. Apply a dab onto your face, neck and hands for smooth, radiant skin.
What makes Coconut Oil such a great skin moisturizer is how easily it’s absorbed into the skin. One of the remarkable benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil is how it fights free-radicals skin cells. Not only does it soften rough skin, but it is also loaded with antioxidants. So not only do you walk away with radiant skin, but you are also preventing wrinkles!

Coconut Oil as a Hair Conditioner:
My deep confession is that I love to color my hair! I make a trip to the salon once every 3-4 months for my maintenance color treatments. What makes this damaging ritual possible for me is my habitual Coconut Oil Conditioning Treatment. After I color my hair I always use this deep conditioning treatment immediately after my hair has been dyed. Then I maintain by following a daily leave in conditioner routine.

DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT: Apply 3-4 teaspoons of coconut oil to your hair.
Massage into your scalp and leave on for 2-3 hours. Then shampoo as usual.

ALL-DAY LONG TREATMENT: Apply a small amount of coconut oil in your hand, rub together, then apply the oil to towel dry hair (all you need is half a teaspoon).  Start from the ends and work your way up, but stop in the middle. You don't want to apply the oil to the scalp. That will give your hair a greasy look! If you do apply too much just re-wash your hair.

TO TREAT DANDRUFF: Use coconut oil as a pre-shampoo treatment. Massage 2 teaspoons of coconut oil into your scalp about half hour to an hour before shampooing. Doing this on a regular basis will keep your scalp dandruff free.

So if your looking for a spa pamper treatment, but do not want to pay the high price tag for it, try one of these Coconut Oil treatments and see if your skin/hair loves the results!

Getting Your Little One Ready For The New Baby!

How to Get Your Child Ready for the New Baby
    By: Rebecca Henry
Becky at 32 weeks pregnant with her daughter Penelope

One of my main concerns with becoming pregnant with baby number 2 was how will it effect my 5yr old daughter. For the past five years Penelope and I have been a twosome. I’ve been blessed with the luxury of being a stay-at-home mom. It has always been just the two of us Monday through Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. Now all of that is about to change. Luckily Penelope is thrilled about her new brother and is very involved with my pregnancy. Here are some things I am doing to prepare Penelope for the arrival of her new baby brother.

1: Let Your Little One Play Dress Up With Your New Belly!
As your body changes and your belly begins to grow, your little one will notice Mommy looks different! Go with it! Encourage your child to notice your expending belly. Every morning Penelope loves to help me pick out my maternity clothes. She gets a huge kick out of dressing mommy’s new, big, tummy.

2: Cooking Fun For The Tummy:
Food is becoming more of an important part of my life. I’m always hungry and I make healthy decisions as to what goes into my body. I can’t stick to the traditional three meals a day now that I have a little boy inside me, so I eat lots of small meals. Penelope loves to cook with mommy, but now she is cooking for baby! I’ve created an easy pregnancy recipe book for Penelope to cook some healthy food for mommy and baby Jude. Each day she picks a new recipe out of the book and helps me make it. Penelope feels important knowing she is feeding her baby brother in mommy’s tummy.

    3: Story Time for Baby:
Bedtime stories are not just a necessity for your child, but they are important for the baby in your womb as well. The baby can hear your voice, reading to your bump helps strengthen the bond between baby and you. This is a great way to connect your child and your pregnancy. Penelope hops in bed with me and reads Jude a bedtime story every night. Jude already recognizes her voice and responds by kicking and moving around when big sissy reads. This not only excites Penelope, but makes her feel bonded to Jude.

    4: Help Me Decorate:
Between you and me I can be somewhat of a control freak when it comes to projects. I like things to be “perfect”. Having Penelope helped me let go of the need to have things flawless. To make sure Penelope doesn’t feel left out or second best, I include her in the baby decisions. She helped me choose a nursery theme then shop for room decor. When the time comes closer to delivery Penelope will also help me decorate the nursery and get everything ready for Jude. Penelope also loves to go shopping for her baby brother because I let her make big sister decisions! She loves sorting through the baby clothes and selecting outfits she wants to see her little brother in.

It’s never too early or too late to get your child involved in your pregnancy. They want to help and connect to both you and the new baby. Having a sibling is a wonderful blessing and it’s important to make sure that foundation is secure at an early stage.

And When Baby Jude Does Arrive...

    A Mother's Love

    A Mother's Love
    By: Author Unknown

A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said:

    For cutting the grass: $5.00
For cleaning up my room this week: $1.00
For going to the store for you: $.50
Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: $.25
    Taking out the garbage: $1.00
For getting a good report card: $5.00
For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00

Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could see the memories flashing through her mind. She picked up the pen, turned over the paper he'd written on, and this is what she wrote:

For the nine months I carried you while you were growing inside me: No Charge
For all the nights that I've sat up with you, doctored and prayed for you: No Charge
For all the trying times, and all the tears that you've caused through the years: No Charge
For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were ahead: No Charge
For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose: No Charge
Son, when you add it up, the cost of my love is: No Charge.

When the boy finished reading what his mother had written, there were big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight at his mother and said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote:

    "PAID IN FULL."

    Eternal Power of Motherhood

The Connection Between Mothers & Daughters
    By: Rebecca Henry

The greatest decision of my life was the choice to become a mother. By today’s standards, I started my family at an early age, 25. I was married and pregnant at 24. Something not too many girls do now, but it was the right path for me. I never knew true love until the birth of my daughter. Something magical happened inside me the night she was born. I looked into her face for the first time and realized, "This is love."

My daughter, Penelope, has brought so much joy, happiness and love into my life. Her birth has touched my life as well as my family's. We are all connected because of her. Life throws us curve balls, hard times, struggles and failures. But no matter what obstacles come our way, Penelope keeps us grounded. Her face is a constant reminder of the importance of family.

I feel blessed to have this bond with my daughter and my mother. It touches me to look at my mom playing with Penelope, doing things with her that she once did with me. Their connection is unbreakable. Penelope once told me that she understands the meaning of a grandmother. She said,

“Mimi (her name for grandma) is not just your mommy, Mimi is my second mommy.”

I about melted when she told me that. At the age of 4, Penelope realized the eternal power of relationships between mothers & daughters.

Fun Arts & Crafts Idea for Mothers Day
If you are searching for a fun arts & craft idea to do with your children for Mother’s Day, try making a Family Tree! I got this idea from my dad when we were visiting him in the states (I live in England) this winter. He made a fun, colorful family tree with Penelope. They used stickers instead of photos.

Making a Family Tree is simple enough for kids ages 2 and up.

    What You'll Need:
    • colorful paper,
    • crayons,
    • tissue paper
    • family pictures.
If you live far away from your extended family, like I do, then you will want to keep your kids connected to their family roots. Here’s an easy & fun way to do it!

    Instructions
-On a colorful piece of construction paper draw a tree.
-On the branches add some green tissue paper for textured leaves.
-Have your child crinkle the tissue paper and glue it onto the tree.
-Then make one side of the tree for mom’s family and the other side for dad's family.
-Or you can just make the entire tree about all of the family.
-Then cut out your family’s photos and paste the faces on the tree.

This project can be very simple or more intricate, it all depends on how much detail you want to add.
Hope you and your little one enjoy this arts and crafts.
    Have A Happy Mother's Day!

Living not only miles, but an entire ocean away from my Mom, I get two requests frequently: (1) More photos of her granddaughters, and (2), "Please mail me Makena's artwork so I can hang it on the refrigerator."

Friendship: A Final Goodbye With The Girls

A Final Goodbye With The Girls
    By: Rebecca Henry

"Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart."
    -Eleanor Roosevelt

Becky is featured in the middle (31 weeks pregnant)
with her four friends: Claire, Yolanda, Julie and Laurie.

I can’t believe three years have passed since I first moved to England. I vividly remember the day I arrived in Britain. Being a Floridian, I found my new surroundings dark, gray and bleak. But soon I learned to appreciate the beauty of English weather and the warm people that live in it.

It didn’t take long before I started calling England home. Over the past three years I have made some lovely friends, adopted a gorgeous Great Dane, (even a cute loving budgie) and experienced many British festivals, events, holidays and of course excellent food! I was even fortunate enough to participate as a bride’s maid at Yolanda's wedding in the English Countryside.

I’m so sad to say that Saturday night was the final time I would ever be with my four close friends in England again. Even though I still have nineteen days remaining before my move to Singapore, Saturday was the last time all five of us could get together for a final girl’s night.  I will miss every one of them dearly and I’m so blessed to have made such loving friends in my short stay in Great Britain.

"Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you know they're always there."

    ORIGINAL POST

From now until May 8th, Inspired Gifts is holding this give-away to help benefit Whatchagonnado.org, which is an organization that was founded by Charley & Jessica Whitt to honor their daughter Tuesday.

Although their site is not completely up and running yet, the idea they have is (it will be up by mid-May).
Whatchagonnado.org is being set up to benefit families that are dealing directly with pediatric cancer. It will help to fund their medical costs, food & travel, and even funeral arrangements, if needed. :(

And, of course, it will also help to provide funds for Pediatric Cancer Research.

Charley & Jess know all too well what it is to live with pediatric cancer....
Tuesday was their beautiful twin daughter who bravely fought and sadly lost her 8 month battle with stage 4 neuroblastoma in January of 2009. They learned firsthand what cancer does to a family and they want to turn their pain & their loss into something to help others.

Inspired Gifts, and all of Jess & Charley's friends, want to do anything we can to help them achieve their goal and make sure that the loss of Tuesday is never forgotten and always has purpose.
