Benefits of Red Wine

Will A Glass of Wine A Day Keep The Doctor Away?
By Rebecca Henry

Being ¾ Italian, I come from a long line of Italian traditions. Since I was a little girl, I remember my Grandma Longo saying, “A glass of red wine a day will keep the doctor away.”

So is this theory of a glass of red wine a day being good for your heart true? According to Joy Bauer, on TODAYshow.com it is.
Drinking one glass of red wine a day is not only safe for you, but it’s healthy! One drink is defined as a 5-ounce glass of red wine.

Benefits of One Glass of Red Wine a Day:
Wine has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. It also lowers the risk of heart attack for people in middle age by ~ 30 to 50 percent. Other studies also indicated that red wine can raise HDL cholesterol (the Good cholesterol) and prevent LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) from forming. Red wine may help prevent blood clots and reduce the blood vessel damage caused by fat deposits.

Nonalcoholic phytochemicals in wine, such as flavanoids and resveratrol, act as antioxidants and prevent molecules known as "free radicals" from causing cellular damage in the body. Resveratrol has been shown to prevent blood clotting and plaque formation in arteries.

So does this conclude that the Italians are on to something in the health department with their glass a day of red wine? I think they are! So next time someone offers me a glass of red wine or a beer with my dinner, I’m going to say:
“Red wine please!”
